Verdict

Harp: a tie at 16″ wide. The Sweet Sixteen publishes 8″ of vertical space; BERNINA does not separately publish the Q16's height (the newer Q16 PLUS lists a 16.5″ throat).

The decisive difference is stitch regulation: the Q16 has BERNINA's longarm stitch regulator built in, while the Sweet Sixteen's regulation (TruStitch) is an add-on — many are sold without it. The HQ counters with a faster published speed ceiling (1,800 SPM), a 10-year casting warranty, and typically a lower bundle price.

If regulated stitches out of the box matter most, the Q16. If you are happy learning unregulated (or adding TruStitch) and want US-made hardware with the longer warranty for less, the Sweet Sixteen. Both need a dealer visit — these are furniture-sized purchases.

Pick the Handi Quilter Sweet Sixteen if…

  • You want the lower price and 10-year casting warranty
  • You are comfortable free-motioning without regulation
  • There is an HQ dealer/service center near you
